How to export optimized PDF from adobe In-design

We sometimes get asked whether we have any presets or job options that clients can use to help export their file from Indesign to convert into a compatible PDF file. With this in mind our design department have provided us with some very valuable information and also a job options file which you can utilize to create the most compatible Stallion Publishers friendly PDF file of your publication.

PDF Document Requirements

  • Minimum PDF Version: Acrobat 6 (PDF 1.5)
  • Maximum size: 500 MB
  • Maximum 1 MB / Page
  • All pages must have the same dimensions
  • Text which should be searchable must be text (not outlines or images)
  • Remove all passwords from PDF (Security, editing and exporting)

Best Practice for Exporting PDF Documents

  • Use Stallion PDF Presets for optimal results (scroll down for presets download link)
  • Export for compatibility with Acrobat 7 (PDF 1.6)
  • Disable Spreads
  • Exclude Interactive Elements
  • Rasterize all text layers.
  • Down sample images to 200 pixels per inch (DPI)
  • Disable crop marks (marks and bleed)
  • Enable color conversion to destination with sRGB and an included destination profile
  • Subset fonts when percent of characters used is less than 100%
  • Disable Password Protection

A PDF preset is a group of settings that affect the process of creating a PDF, it can be integrated into your Adobe InDesign software to enable you to export your publication with the correct settings required for the Stallion Publishers platform.

PDF Preset Overview and Installation advice

Installing the Stallion PDF Preset (Job Options) in InDesign and how to export PDF:

  • Download the Stallion PDF Preset
  • In InDesign's File menu select Adobe PDF Presets > Define...
  • Select Load... and locate the Stallion PDF Preset file
  • To export pdf, go to File menu > Adobe PDF presets > Stallion PDF Preset

Installing the Stallion PDF Preset (Job Options) by copying the file (Mac OS X):

  • If you are running Acrobat 6 copy the Stallion PDF Preset file to: "Users > Shared > Adobe PDF 6.0 > Settings""
  • If you are running Acrobat 7 or 8 copy the Stallion PDF Preset file to: "Library > Application Support > Adobe PDF > Settings" or "Library > Application Support > Adobe > Adobe PDF > Settings"

Installing the Stallion PDF Preset (Job Options) by copying the file (Windows):

  • If you are running Acrobat 4 and 5 copy the Stallion PDF Preset file to: "Program Files > Adobe > Adobe Acrobat > Distiller > Settings"
  • If you are running Acrobat 6 copy the Stallion PDF Preset file to: "Documents and Settings > All Users > Shared Documents > Adobe PDF 6.0 > Settings"
  • If you are running Acrobat 7 copy the Stallion PDF Preset file to: "Documents and Settings > All Users > Shared Documents > Adobe PDF > Settings" or "Program Files > Adobe > Acrobat 7.0 > Distiller > Settings"
  • If you are running Acrobat 8 copy the Stallion PDF Preset file to: "Documents and Settings > All Users > Shared Documents > Adobe PDF > Settings" or "Program Files > Adobe > Acrobat 8.0 > Acrobat > Settings"

Stallion PDF Preset settings:

General:

  • Standard: None
  • Compatibility: Acrobat 7 (PDF 1.6)
  • Spreads: Off
  • Embed Page Thumbnails: Off
  • Include Bookmarks: On
  • Include Hyperlinks: On
  • Include Visible Guides and Grids: Off
  • Include Non-Printing Objects: Off
  • Include Interactive Elements: Off

Compression:

  • Color Images > Bicubic Downsampling to 150 pixels per inch for images
    above 250 (JPEG, High)
  • Grayscale Images > Bicubic Downsampling to 150 pixels per inch for images
    above 250 (JPEG, High)
  • Monochrome Images > Bicubic Downsampling to 150 pixels per inch for images
    above 250 (CCITT Group 4)
  • Crop Image Data to Frames: On
  • Compress Text and Line Art: On

Marks and Bleeds:

  • Marks: Off
  • Bleed and Slug: Off

Output:

  • Color Conversion: Convert to Destination
  • Destination: sRGB
  • Profile Inclusion Policy: Include Destination Profile

Advanced:

  • Subset fonts when percent of characters used is less than 100%

Security:

  • Require a password to open the document: Off
  • Use a password to restrict printing, editing and other tasks: Off
