On Sept. 21, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 74 escorted the crew to a pe- rimeter expansion construction site. Mags Miller, a producer for the docu- mentary, said that her directive came shortly after the head of National Geo- graphic visited Camp Leatherneck with National Security Advisor Gen. James Jones, USMC (Ret.), about two months ago. According to Miller, he was abso- lutely amazed by the camp. The National Geographic crew spent ?ve weeks ?lm- ing troops at Camp Leatherneck, as well as some of the surrounding forward operating bases and combat outposts within the Helmand province of Af- ghanistan. The ?rst phase of construction for Camp Leatherneck was ?nished in May 2009 by NMCB-5. The second phase of construction, which will triple the size of the camp, has been the responsibility of NMCB-74 since August. Ensign Eric Julius, USN, NMCB-74 Leatherneck Expansion Project Of- ?cer, was interviewed on camera and answered many questions concerning the mission of the Seabees at Leather- neck. Ensign Julius showed the crew what they were doing on the expansion project. Our goal is to expand Leatherneck and provide a staging area for the Ma- rines, he told Miller. We are helping them accomplish their mission. The Seabees of NMCB-74 expressed gratitude for National Geographics ef- forts to showcase the important work they have carried out in Helmand Prov- ince. The documentary is slated to air in early 2010.
