<P>opment. These include the opportunity for developmental assignments in other functional areas and other geographic locations, outreach training courses for critical skill topics, and enhanced leader-development programs. One of the key objectives of the program is to facilitate a culture of lifetime learning. Q: Does the CP-18 program promote professional licensure? Many engineering and science civil- ian career series have professional li- censure, certi?cation, or accreditation requirements, and we certainly endorse and support the training and experien- tial learning required to obtain these credentials. Depending on the series and grade, professional credentials are integrated into the professional devel- opment maps publicized on the CP-18 website as a guide for career planning. Professional Engineer and Registered Architect, Certi?ed Construction Man- ager and Project Management Profes- sional, to name just a few, signify im- portant professional achievements for individuals within the career program. Credentials are critical to the career development and advancement of our civilian workforce. I strongly advise our team members both to start early in ac- quiring the professional credentials ap- propriate for their career paths and to pursue continuing education as part of their professional development lifetime learning. Q: USACE has a substantial training portfolio managed by the USACE Learning Center (ULC) in Huntsville, Ala. How do these courses impact your program? The courses offered at ULC are de- signed to ful?ll critical training needs of not only our workforce, but also that of other Department of Defense and civil- ian agencies. Each of our careerists, in cooperation with his or her supervisor, develops an individual development plan (IDP) that identi?es desired train- ing, education and developmental ex- periences for the next three to ?ve years. Courses at ULC that meet the identi?ed training needs are often incorporated these IDPs. The high quality of ULC courses that are developed and executed by experts in their ?elds has greatly contributed both to individual achievements that set the standard for the profession as well as superior organizational perfor- mance in delivering critical engineer- ing services to the Army, the nation and other nations. I should also note that ULC has been a great partner in both developing and updating our profes- sional career maps. Q: How important is member- ship in professional societies to ones career development in the Army? Though involvement in professional societies is not a requirement for ca- reer development, belonging to profes- sional societies does have a valuable role, particularly in fostering lifetime learning. Professional societies offer the opportunity for people to interact and exchange ideas, to share knowledge and information that bene?ts both the indi- vidual and the collective community of practices in which they serve. Q: How many career series are part of CP-18? Is there a career roadmap designating important positions, education and training that should be accomplished by a motivated careerist? There are currently more than 42 different series involved in CP-18. We have worked to develop professional development maps for 13 of our top 30 populations and have a targeted devel- opment schedule to complete the re- mainder over the next two years. Each map has speci?c functional competencies and training, profes- sional experience, Army leadership development training, recommended university training and education as well as Army mandatory training. Each map also provides additional resources such as learning resources, links to ca- reer regulations and other Army civilian personnel sites. Each map targets various levels and grades from entry-level and intern to se- nior leadership. We will continue to work hard to develop and improve both the tools and opportunities available to sup- port professional development within the career program, but I cant over-em- phasize the most important ingredients for successful professional development: the drive, desire and motivation of each careerist in their own career.
