<P>32The Military Engineer L January-February L 2010 Technology News Army Launches Technology Blog The U.S. Army launched a new blog recently to help soldiers and the pub- lic discover a little-known side of the Army: the research, development, en- gineering, testing and evaluation that goes into the technologies that make soldiers safer and more effective. On Nov. 2, the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Com- mand (RDECOM) launched Army Technology Live, at armytechnology. armylive.dodlive.mil. The blog joins the growing family of Army blogs hosted by the Department of Defenses DODLive blog-hosting service. RDECOM and its eight subordinate elements create a wide range of technologies used by soldiers every day, and its just one of a number of Army organizations that focus on tech- nology, according to Robert DiMichele, RDECOM Public Affairs Of?cer. RDECOM has almost 17,000 peo- ple—the majority of them civilian sci- entists and engineers—who do a lot of the research and engineering that goes into new technologies, but thats not well known, DiMichele said. Part of the reason is that the equipment that results from the research and develop- ment done here may not get into sol- diers hands until years later. Some of our scientists are looking at the mol- ecules of material that will become a new food item or armor formulation in 10 years or 20 years. Others are engineering upgrades to equipment already in the ?eld. We want to show as much of that process as we can. According to DiMichele, the command isnt going to limit topics on the blog to projects it takes part in, and the subject matter will evolve over time. First, we have to be careful not to put soldiers at risk, he said. Opera- tions security is always in the forefront of what we do. There are projects wed love to talk about, capabili- ties were spending taxpayer money on that soldiers are waiting for in the ?eld. But we dont want to expose any existing vulnerabilities or explain so much about an upcoming piece of equipment that people can start planning how to defeat it now. Because of those and other concerns, the content of the blog will likely evolve over time, he said. RDECOM is already talking to other organizations involved in Army technology, and hopes to see growing input from the ?eld. The blog joins an effort currently underway in the command. RDECOM already has a presence on social me- dia sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, so that those who want to know about Army technology can ?nd it where they are instead of having to go to one place and get it one way. Weve been building our social me- dia capability for several months now, as well as our capacity to tell the Army technology story, DiMichele said. If any Army command knows how important it is to keep up with changes in technology, its RDECOM. The blog and our social media sites help us bring that same phi- losophy to our communication. (By RDECOM Public Affairs) AFRL Funding Propels Advances in Eco-Friendly Rocket Fuel A collaborative effort by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the National Aeronautics and Space Admin- istration (NASA) and academia resulted in the successful launch of a small rocket using a safe, environmentally-friendly propellant. The substance, comprising aluminum powder and ice, and known as ALICE, is suitable both for short ?ights in the earths atmosphere and for long-distance space missions, an advan- tageous utility in achieving NASAs ex- ploration goals. Leveraging AFRL funding, aerospace engineers from NASA and graduate re- searchers from Purdue University and Pennsylvania State University con- ducted the investigations of nanoscale aluminum and water formulas that ul- timately precipitated development of the new propellant—a substance with the consistency of toothpaste. Once manufactured, the paste-like material ?ts easily into molds, where it cools to a temperature of -30°C a day before ?ight. During testing, the 9-ft, ALICE-fueled rocket soared to a height of 1,300-ft over Purdue Universitys Scholer Farms in In- diana. The energetic propellant, which exhibits a high burn rate, achieved a maximum thrust of 650-lbs during tests. These results are exciting news to the research community; they indicate that ALICE could potentially replace— and outperform—certain conventional liquid or solid propellants, especially if improved via the addition of oxidizers. Further, ALICE could theoretically be manufactured in distant places, such as the moon or even Mars, instead of being transported to such remote loca- tions at high cost.
