<P>38The Military Engineer L January-February L 2010 submitted a provisional patent application for a structure known as Hydrostatically-Enabled Structural Element (HESE) that can be used for structure support, including building stabilization. The technology uses a strong fabric or membrane, sand and pressure to form a support column, said Dr. Welch. The tie-in to carbon nanotubes is the 1-million-psi membrane material we are seeking to develop. The nanotube-strength- ened material would allow a fabric structure and simple sand, which will be strengthened using the same pressure phenomenon that makes vacuum-packed coffee packages rigid, to have load-carrying capabilities on par with a con- crete column. HESE was developed in response to a Department of Homeland Security request for a way to stabilize damaged buildings for rescue efforts like that needed during the Okla- homa City bombing, when rescuers could not reach survi- vors. The technology will have the ability to be placed and then in?ated and ?lled on location. This is a very magical time to be in research, and this is a particularly exciting line of research to be in. We will continue with it until weve reached our goal—the creation of a super material, said Dr. Welch. For more information, contact Wayne A. Stroupe at wayne.a.stroupe@usace.army.mil. DARPA Program Brings Sci-Fi Capability to Warfighters Moviegoers were captivated as they watched a villain turn to liquid before assuming new forms capable of squeezing through narrow openings in the ?lm Terminator 2: Judg- ment Day. Scientists at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) were wowed, too, and theyre now working to deliver that same kind of technology to support war?ghters on the battle?eld. Mitchell R. Zakin, Program Manager for DARPAs Program- mable Matter division, is convinced the concept depicted for decades in blockbuster movies and comic books has real-life applications. Zakin is leading the effort to develop program- mable matter, which he calls the ultimate adaptable mate- rial. It will be capable of changing size and shape and taking on new properties for one use, he explained, then adapting to a whole different form for another use. War?ghters carry an incredible amount of stuff and they dont have any more room to carry more, he said. Yet they are facing much more complicated battle spaces. Theyre go- ing into caves and working in cities. They need more sophis- ticated tools to deal with these environments, yet they cant carry them. The logistical challenge of getting equipment to remote areas such as Afghanistan exacerbates the problem. Enter the concept of programmable matter, a convergence of the ?elds of chemistry, information, mathematical theory and engineering. Zakin envisions a day when war?ghters will be able to reach into their kit, pull out a lump of programmable matter and form it into whatever they need. Think of it as car- rying a paint can with a bunch of particles inside, he advises anyone struggling to understand how it all would work. The particles could be different shapes and sizes, be made up of different materials and have different functions. Depending on the requirement, a war?ghter could in- struct the particles to become whatever was needed at the moment—a wrench, a hammer, a spare part. The particles would then organize themselves to form that item. After us- ing the device, the war?ghter would return it to the bucket, where it once again would become a bunch of particles until instructed to become something else. Fantastic as this sounds, its well on its way to becoming a reality. Five university-led teams are participating in DARPAs Programmable Matter program, and by the middle of next year, at least one is expected to emerge with a demonstra- tion project. Halfway through the programs second and ?nal phase, all ?ve teams are making convincing progress that its all possible. The teams began the ?rst phase of the program doing com- puter modeling, but got so excited by the project that they jumped head?rst into the second phase and began building actual prototypes, Zakin said. By the end of the second phase, theyre expected to demonstrate that they can take a single set of building blocks and create ?ve different geometric shapes with the strength of engineering plastic.
