<P>2The Military Engineer l May-June l 2010 Presidents Message In Retrospect Its hard to believe that a year has elapsed since I became the SAME President. Meeting the SAME leaders and doers around the country has been a great experience; I have seen SAME grow and change on our journey from good to great with dis- ciplined thought and bold action. In a letter distributed to Post Presidents shortly after becoming President, I set several goals for the coming year. Perhaps the most important goal was to reverse the decline in membership among the uniformed services and grow overall membership 5 percent. To meet this challenge, the SAME Board of Direction at its October meeting changed the dues structure for individuals in the uniformed services so that individuals in uniform serving our country would pay a one-time fee of $60 to maintain mem- bership without additional dues for as long as they remained in uniform. The dues for Department of Defense ci- vilians also were substantially reduced. I am happy to report that we have indeed increased membership among the uniformed services from 2009 to 2010, and it continues to grow every month. Additionally, SAME saw an overall membership increase of 9 percent in 2009. Congratulations to all Posts that actively recruited and re- tained members. The theme for the past year has been based on the Jim Collins book Good to Great. We have worked to set the standard for the military engineer profession, maintain the unique characteristics of SAME and build SAME to last. I have seen many examples of SAME setting the standard with continuing education programs and initia- tives to de?ne and implement sustainability. The uniqueness of SAME is twofold. First, SAME is the only association that brings all the uniformed service engineers together to share ideas and foster joint engineering. Second, SAME brings together the public and private sectors in the interest of national security. SAME provides many opportunities for public and private sector engineers and other professionals to share ideas, learn from each other and forge partnerships that are so essential in producing the record-level military construction and civil works programs of the past several years. We have seen the annual SAME Joint Engineer Training Conference & Expo (JETC) grow in numbers and dem- onstrate SAMEs contribution to joint engineering. Transitioning from an annual U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Small Business Conference, which had been co-sponsored by SAME for the past four years, to a DOD Small Business Conference was a change I supported that will bring even greater bene?t to small businesses seeking to work for DOD. I am proud of SAMEs K-12 outreach initiatives. Not only are Posts engaged, they are engaged with a passion for introducing Americas youth to the excitement of an engineering profession. The SAME Engineering & Con- struction Camps have proven to be the cornerstone of SAMEs high-school outreach, with more than one-half of our Posts sending a high-school student or mentor to one of the three camps. Posts also are beginning to imple- ment the West Point Bridge Competition and are helping young boys and girls earn architecture, engineering and environmental merit badges and patches through the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. The SAME Academy of Fellows has continued to raise the bar to demonstrate the importance of mentoring. The Fellows had a great day in March that included a luncheon, the Investiture of the Fellows Class of 2010 and the annual Golden Eagle Awards Dinner, where we recognized the Honorable Eric K. Shinseki, Secretary of Vet- eran Affairs, and our own William A. Brown Sr., P.E., HAIA, F.SAME. It was a memorable day. I have had the opportunity to speak at several regional conferences and Post meetings during the past year, and I can say that SAME is alive and well with great programs and passionate members.
