Nick Justice, USA, Com- manding General of the Research, De- velopment and Engineering Command (RDECOM) traveled with key members of his staff to Apple Inc. headquarters in California to discuss the use of Apple products in Army business and battle- ?eld operations. Apple of?cials gave the Army group tours of the companys laboratories and other facilities and talked about some examples of where the military is already using Apple technology. The Armys research and development com- mand is evaluating commercial hand- held solutions such as the iPad, iPhone, iPod, iMac and MacBook platforms. The Army is moving away from big-green-box solutions and toward those that will adapt along with our warfighters on the battle?eld, Gen. Justice said. Gen. Justice said the Army recognized the billions of dollars invested by indus- try to develop its devices. Were continuing to leverage com- mercial technology for battle?eld uses; we cant ignore that kind of existing knowledge, he said. Our job, as stew- ards of the taxpayers dollar, is to adopt and adapt appropriate commercial technology and offer the best possible solution to the war?ghter. The meeting was part of the Armys efforts to support Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications, an initiative to demonstrate the technical capabilities of handheld devices and applications to the Army and gathering war?ghter. The working group is tasked with looking at how commercial cellular technology— including devices, applications and networks—could be utilized in a tacti- cal environment. Within RDECOM, the Communica- tions-Electronics Research and Devel- opment Center (CERDEC) has devel- oped numerous handheld command and control solutions and is supporting the development and transition of two iPhone applications: COIN Collector, a counter-insurgency information collec- tion tool; and MilSpace, a planning and social networking environment.
