For more information, contact SAME Communications Specialist Amanda Johnson at ajohnson@same.org. sustainability news (continued) Iraqi Leaders, U.S. Forces Honor Earth Day, Open Landfill Iraqi leaders and U.S. forces celebrated Earth Day in April by opening the ?rst land?ll in Baqubah, Diyala Province, Iraq, providing the public an environmentally- safe location to dispose of solid waste. The Baqubah Qada Land?ll was ?rst conceived in July 2009 by the 37th En- gineer Battalion—Joint Task Force (JTF) Eagle, the 1-25 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, the Diyala Provincial Reconstruc- tion Team and the Diyala Provincial Government. Solid waste management throughout Diyala had remained a rela- tively consistent problem and became a serious health risk for Baqubah residents. The land?ll quickly became a top priority for Diyala province leaders and construc- tion began on Oct. 22, 2009. At the present moment, other than the one weve built in Baqubah, there are no other functioning land?lls in the province, said Capt. Greg Sablan, USA, the JTF Eagle Commanders Emergency Response Pro- gram (CERP) Project Manager. This is the Government of Iraqs ?rst stab at complet- ing the loop on solid waste management. Because Baqubah is the capital of Diyala, it sets the example for all other future pro- grams like this in other qadas cities. Plans for the land?ll were developed as a CERP project for the preservation of local civic cleanup activities, the No. 1 priority for the Provincial Government. Construc- tion was planned, coordinated and exe- cuted by members of JTF Eagle, their Iraqi partners from the 5th Iraqi Army Field En- gineer Regiment and the Diyala Province Director General of Municipalities. Keefe, USA) Administration Officials Release Progress Report on Climate Change Adaptation Task Force In 2009, CEQ, the Of?ce of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) initiated the Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force, which in- cludes representatives from more than 20 Federal Agencies. When President Barack Obama signed E.O. 13514 on Oct. 5, 2009, he called on the task force to develop, with- in one year, federal recommendations for adapting to climate change impacts both domestically and internationally. On March 6, CEQ, OSTP and NOAA released an interim task force progress report. The report outlines the task forces progress to date and recommends key components to include in a national strat- egy on climate change adaptation.
