<P>The Military Engineer ? No. 66655 Q Leader Pro?le Honoring Women Who Serve in Uniform For this special Leader Pro?le, The Military Engineer spoke with Brig. Gen. Theresa Carter, P.E., USAF, Rear Adm. Katherine Gregory, P.E., CEC, USN, and Rear Adm. (S) Paula Brown, P.E., CEC, USN, about the opportunities available to women as uniformed military engineers. These women are the ?rst female of?cers to advance to general or ?ag of?cer rank in the civil engineer branches in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy. What would you tell young women today about career opportunities in military engineering? Have more opportunities opened up for women during your military career? PB: Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be where I am today. When I joined the Navy in 1982, the Civil Engineer Corps only allowed four new women accessions a year; now we will take all quali?ed women applicants. At that time and for a decade later, women were not allowed in Seabee battalions. Starting in 1993, female of?cers were al- lowed in battalion leadership positions; I jumped on that opportunity and was se- lected as an executive of?cer. Women are now in almost all senior leadership posi- tions: battalion commanders, regimental commanders, surface warfare of?cers, pilots and, recently, on board submarines. It is a very exciting time, and the sky is the limit. (Although as a pilot, you can reach that one, too!) KG: Engineers are in high demand in the military, and the rewards are tremendous. A career as a military engineer provides both the opportunity to use technical skills to solve tangible, immediate and im- portant problems, and also the opportu- nity to lead people. Young military person- nel tend to be assigned jobs with greater responsibility than their civilian counter- parts, and the satisfaction of working and being responsible for a team of people (military and/or civilian) who resolve an issue, build or repair a facility, or enable military forces to execute their mission safely is immensely satisfying. During my career, the opportunities for women have signi?cantly increased. Today there are no positions or jobs in the Navy engineer community to which women are not as- signed. TC: I see tremendous opportunities for young women in military engineering, both now and in the future. Our young of?cers are gaining incredible leadership experience at a very young age, and Im convinced the junior of?cers of today will raise the bar even higher 10 to 15 years from now as general of?cers leading Air Force civil engineering. Our skill set is in high demand—both in garrison and in a deployed environment—and any of?cer, male or female, who exhibits the drive, de- termination and leadership to make the mission happen will succeed. I do believe more opportunities have opened and will open for women in the military. For exam- ple, speaking speci?cally about civil engi- neering, we are not as reluctant to deploy women to key leadership positions in the Central Command area of responsibility. I think opportunities for women in the mili- tary will continue to grow, and I expect in the next 10 years well see the ?rst female four-star in the Air Force and, perhaps, the ?rst female Air Force Chief of Staff.
