But, by the age of 14, it was the instrument that hed settled on, and today, friends and fans of contemporary jazz are glad that he made that choice. Russell has blessed his fans numerous times over the years, building a repertoire of lush collaborations that have paired him with such luminary music artists as Ramsey Lewis, Freddie Hubbard, the late Art Porter, Alphonse Mouzon, Dee Dee Warwick, Ken Chaney, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Henry Johnson, Corey Wilkes and more. His latest album, Circle Without End, continues this tradition, positioning Russells accomplished creativity and musicianship out front, backed by an all-star cadre of his peers— each a household name in his own right. The 16-track offering features Miles Davis ensemble alumnus Robert Irving III, Darryl Jones of The Rolling Stones, Wallace Roney, Richard Patterson and noted Brazilian percussionist Dedé Sampaio, all of whom seamlessly join forces with Russell to make his journey real, and realized. Circle Without Ends standout compositions simply not to be missed include the title track, followed by Code MD II, Would If I Could, Shirleys Prayer and Desi In Sedona. A ?tting follow-up to his successful 2005 debut, Covering All Basses, the new album is also garnering noteworthy airplay domestically, as well as internationally, recently charting at 75 on the Media Guide Indie and 87 on the Jazz Week Top 200, while simultaneously emerging as one of the hottest radio playlist adds. The industry is taking note. Franks arranging prowess and versatility on bass are palpable on this CD, says Jon Liebman, noted composer, author, educator and fellow bassist. He demonstrates a wide variety of bass playing here, from funky slapping and R&B grooving, to lyrical fretless and tasteful ?ve-string. Frank is a great player and a great groover. With two solid releases under his belt, this dutiful sideman is solidifying his standing as an established solo artist.
